What are some site you endeavor for inspiration?
Couldn’t think of specific one. We always ask “professor google” though.
Any advice you can share with business owners wanting to start a business?
Start something you know you will love forever. The term “business” akinai in Japanese- means “never feel bored” when written in different chinese characters. Starting your own business is fun and exciting, but there are always up and downs. You need the passion to keep you fueled to go on, so always start something from your heart!

REINA & NANAO
Ecotwaza
We are both from Tokyo, Japan. Reina spent her childhood (from 2 to 10) in NY, USA. Nanao grew up in Japan but decided to go to college in the States. They met in university (UC Berkeley), when they lived in the same dorm. Nanao was there as a full-time student, and Reina was an exchange student from a Japanese university.
How did Ecotwaza originate?
Ecotwaza is an online store that introduces fun and sustainable lifestyle products sourced locally in Japan. Our customers are international, half from overseas and half within Japan, and the local market is growing. The main service is the TOMORROW BOX- a subscription service of seasonal eco products that help you enjoy the season better at home. Ecotwaza is trying to be a community of like-minded people, to share good lifestyles and communicate between Japanese and non-Japanese. We believe communication and mutual understanding is the key for moving the world in a different direction.
Reina has wanted to start her own business in spreading sustainability since highschool, but everyone around told her to work in normal business and do the environmental stuff as volunteer. The reason why she wanted to do it as business was because environmental issues can’t be solved unless people notice that economy is inside the eco-system, not the other way around, and she felt the need of new organizations that are built on that notion to make a change.
Where are you both from?

1/1
She decided to start on her own at the age of 25, when she felt that the society was at last starting to notice that economy and environment has to go hand in hand. Nanao takes up on the operational side, sourcing from SMEs with unique skills, while Reina is more of a vision-teller, communication person who often appears in media as a specialist in eco lifestyle.

I love the eco-friendly note of the line, is perma-culture in the future?
Thank you. We are focusing on lifestyle products made in sustainable manner AND makes your life healthy. Permaculture is one aspect and we are definitely looking into it.
Where are your hobbies?
Reina’s hobby is basket ball (which started when she was 30- and now on a brake because of pregnancy, childcare, then pregnancy again) and traveling. Nanao’s hobby is climbing, traveling and snow boarding.
Where are your favorite places to dine?
Both of us don’t dine out that much- rather a house-cook type especially after marriage, but there is a nice vegetarian restaurant on the first floor of our office that we love. Our office is on the second floor of a normal Japanese-style house with tatami rooms. The first floor is a restaurant owned by somebody else .
