How did you get into photography?
My dad was always photographing something--flowers, landscapes, cars, airplanes... I wanted to be just like him, so I picked up his camera. He eventually got me my own automatic Nikon 35mm when I was about 7 and I would look forward to the last days of school each year when he'd let me take it in to snapshot my friends before summer vacation. He always says he couldn't have anticipated how far I'd take photography; I earned my BFA from California College of the Arts in Oakland and continue to pursue opportunities both artistic and commercial in nature.

Any tips for newbies?
Keep looking and keep shooting. Take note of the kind of images that excite and inspire you and try to recreate them. Pay attention to light; work on bringing out details in the shadows as well as maintaining them in the highlights. Get closer to your subject to see how you can make a more interesting picture. Move farther away and play with space & perspective. And never, ever, ever, ever, under any circumstances, EVER, use selective color on a black and white photograph.

What is your favorite lens for shooting?
Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 Pancake Lens
Wide enough, but close enough, portable as fuck. Freedom in one amazingly sharp piece of camera equipment.
