CANDY

Where are you from?
I live in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.
When did you start your art, when was the moment, when you said, "I want to do this for the rest of my life"?
Creativity has been a part of my whole life. It's what makes me stay up all night and forget about time.
Most of your art is staged on a public forum, how did the notion of sharing it with the public come about?
Years ago I lived in Chinatown in New York City. The streets are filled with flyers and stickers, and I was four blocks from 11 Spring Street when it was a big hub for street art. It made me feel like public space was an informal, colorful place where I could add to the mix too. I ran a record label with my friends and made street art. When I got my masters degree in urban planning, my questions about the city turned into interactive experiments in public space.

Your favorite restaurant in the city you live in?
I've had many life-affirming evenings at Bacchanal and its big magically-lit tropical garden in my neighborhood.
Any advice for upcoming artists on getting started?
Follow your questions and trust your experiences. Google the hell out of calls for art and artist grants and apply away. One thing will lead to another, and then people will start inviting you to make things.
I feel like you're starting a movement, of sort, like I am, what is the end goal for you?
It's been one of the greatest experiences of my life to see this little experiment on an abandoned house in my neighborhood grow into a global project. It's all thanks to passionate people around the world who have created their own walls, and I'm so happy to celebrate them in the new book. I just hope to enjoy more places with the people I love and keep making things I want in my world.
